About this Product

In 1893, the United States Mint introduced the first Commemorative coin in United States history...The 1893 Columbus Half Dollar

This Half Dollar was struck for the World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago combined with the 400th Anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. On August 5, 1892 Congress approved a bill providing for a U.S. Silver Dollar of legal weight and fineness, in quanities not to exceed 5,000,000 pieces...later to be known as this Columbus Half Dollar. It is presumed that these Columbian Half Dollars were made from melted down early Seated Liberty, Three Cent pieces, Half Dimes, Trade Dollars and other obsolete Silver coins. The obverse shows the bust of Columbus while the reverse has a representation of Columbus' flag ship the Santa Maria above two hemispheres.

Did you know?

The 1893 Columbus Half Dollar is the first United States Coin to bear the image of a specific person - Christopher Columbus. Prior U.S. Mint issues were all renderings of Liberty.
