About this Product Full Product Name

To commemorate the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth Massachusetts 300 years earlier, Congress authorized a special half dollar on May 12, 1920. On the obverse of this coin is a portrait of Governor William Bradford. Bradford was an English Separatist leader in Holland, who left England with the Scrooby congregation in 1607. The Separatists, after King James I declared to put an end to church reform movements, believed the Church of England was hopeless and thus they would severe all ties. The Separatists, including Bradford, were free to practice their religion in the Dutch Republic, however, they were troubled by the influence the Dutch customs and language had on their children. This led to their eventual voyage to the New World on the Mayflower.

Governor Bradford was one of the first signatories to the Mayflower Compact, the first governing document of Plymouth Colony, which was based upon a majority-rule system along with the settlers' allegiance to the King. It set the rules to govern the people of Plymouth, for both the sake of order, and the sake of survival. Bradford also served as Governor of Plymouth five times covering about thirty years between 1621-1657. This, and the events listed above, provide the reasoning behind his commemoration on the obverse of this coin.

The reverse of the coin features the Mayflower ship itself. A ship that carried 102 pilgrims, defined as travelers who are on a journey to a holy place, along with a crew of 30-40 people from England all the way to Massachusetts. Two months after departing, the Mayflower finally anchored in November.

This half dollar celebrates these brave people, and the colony they formed in what is now known as New England.

Very few of these coins were minted almost a century ago, so grab one up before it's too late!

This coin is a certified 63.
