About this Product

President Grant was a dominant military and political figure during the Civil War and Reconstruction.

His Military accomplishments are many ... he was a graduate of West Point in 1843, and served in the Mexican American War. He came out of retirement after the start of the Civil War and quickly earned a reputation as one of the most aggressive generals of the war. He captured Vicksburg on July of 1863 splitting the southern army in half. President Lincoln promoted him to General in Chief, giving him charge of all the Union Armies by an act of Congress. His Overland Campaign finally yielded a breakthrough at Petersburg, with the eventual capture of the confederate capital of Richmond, and the surrender by Lee at Appomattox.

As President he served two terms, the first President since Andrew Jackson to do so in 40 years. He led Reconstruction by signing and enforcing a number of civil rights laws. He also help rebuild the Republican party in the south leading to the election of African Americans to Congress and local state governments for the first time.

In 1922, for the 100th anniversary of his birth, the US Mint released a special silver half dollar. The obverse a portrait of President Grant with the reverse Grant's birth residence in Point Pleasant Ohio. This half dollar was made in minuscule numbers - less than 1500 coins were made for each state, compared to millions of the regular issue Walking Liberty Half Dollar.

This product offers our circulated General Grant half dollar in a capsule and protective black pouch.
