The Sesquicentennial of American Independence

The Declaration of Indepedence, adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4th, 1776, announced that the thirteen American Colonies regarded themselves as independent and sovereign states. This document formed a new nation - The United States of America. Composed by Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration was ultimately formal explanation of why Congress had voted on July 2nd to declare independence from Great Britain, more than a year after the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War.

The 150th Anniversary of the signing of the signing of the Declaration of Independence was the occasion for an international fair held in Philadelphia in 1926. To help raise funds, special issues of half dollars and quarter eagles were authorized by Congress. For the first time, a portrait of a President appeared on a coin struck during his own lifetime. Presidents Calvin Coolidge and George Washington are depicted on the obverse of the half dollar. The reverse bears a model of the Liberty Bell.
