About this Product

After the final year of the Peace Dollar's production in 1935 the US didn't have a Silver Dollar in production for nearly 40 years. That all changed in 1971 when the Eisenhower ( Ike ) Dollar was released. It Honored both President Eisenhower ( obverse design ) and the 1st landing of a man on the moon ( reverse design ). The design was changed in 1975 - 1976 in honor of our Bicentennial. The Bicentennial design choices were unique in our silver dollar history ... the reverse stayed with the "man landing on the moon" theme by placing the Liberty Bell over the moon, but the subtle change to the front made history. The date of 1776-1976 was the 1st dual date silver dollar in US History.

After only a few years the US Mint soon found out the people wouldn't circulate a dollar coin when they had the light weight paper dollar instead, so the series was cancelled after only 8 years of production in 1978. The regular issue coins were struck at both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints.
