About this Product

In 1971 the United States Mint brought back a dollar denominated coin for the 1st time since the Peace Dollar Series ended in 1935. The U.S. Mint issued two special SILVER Eisenhower Dollars in 1971, both never released into circulation. They were issued as a special tribute to our 34th President's contributions to our country. The Eisenhower was the last 38.1 mm silver dollar issued for circulation by the US Mint.

It's theme on the obverse was to celebrate the life of President, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, 10/14/1890 - 3/28/69, nicknamed "Ike". He was a Five Star General in the U.S. Army, a U.S. Politician, and the 34th President of the United States (1953-1961). He served as Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in Europe during WWII. In 1951, he became the first supreme commander of NATO.

As President, the accolades continued with the overseeing of the cease-fire of the Korean War, kept up the pressure on the Soviet Union during the Cold War, made nuclear weapons a higher defense priority, launched the Space Race, enlarged the Social Security program, and began the Interstate Highway System.

Then on the reverse of the coin, the Apollo 11 moon landing is commemorated. Due to the significance of the year 1969, the same year of Eisenhower's death.

This set includes the Silver Proof & Uncirculated Silver issues from San Francisco. Each are encapsulated and presented in our custom display box.
