About this Product

The Keelboat nickel was the second nickel in the United States Mint's Westward Journey Nickel Series. It was designed to emulate the image of the very type of boat that Lewis and Clark used on their journey to finding a water route to the Pacific Ocean, along with the visions of President Thomas Jefferson. Lewis & Clark left Camp River Dubois in May of 1804 in a specially designed keelboat that they traveled up the Mississippi River in. Once they arrived at the first leg of their trip in Fort Mandan, they sent the boat back down the river filled with water specimens and reports, to report back to the President with. It was Lewis & Clark who established the first, most accurate waterway map of the land to the far west. The Keelboat is the best symbol to denote the type of transit that enabled them to search out their destination of the Pacific Ocean and back home again.

A roll contains 40 Westward Keelboat Uncirculated nickels, each one released from the Denver Mint. Each 40-coin roll will be sent to you in a plastic protective tube. The roll will be shipped to you in a plastic protective tube.
