The Franklin Set that Struck Collectors Like Lightning! The 2006 Scientist Coin & Chronicle Collection!

Benjamin Franklin is truly one of our nation’s greatest founding fathers. He was a man of many hats, excelling in each of his roles for our fledgling nation in a near impossible feat of intellect. When looking at the collective results of his life’s work as a Printer, Postmaster, and Statesman; it is ironic that one of his least famous roles, that of a scientist, was the one that every single American imagines when they think of him!

On this very day, more than 267 years ago, Benjamin Franklin famously flies a kite during a thunderstorm that is then struck by lightning! By tying a key around the string, he was able to collect the charge in a Leyden jar and once and for all prove his notion of the “electrical nature of lightning”. In honor of this historic anniversary we decided to bring back one of the rarest Benjamin Franklin collections that honors his work as a Scientist: the 2006 Coin and Chronicle collection!

Did you know? Ben Franklin has invented several of the words we use today! ‘Battery’, ‘Conductor’, and ‘Electrician’ were all his creations! He also well known for inventing something that has saved all of us from quite a shock at one point or another in our lives--- the Lightning Rod!

A Special Release on his 300th Anniversary

The special release in 2006 of the Benjamin Franklin Silver Dollars came in commemoration of the tercentenary of the birth of one of our nation’s most influential founding fathers: Benjamin Franklin. What was unique about this release was that the fact that two differently designed silver dollars was to be minted with a total mintage of no more than 250,000 each. The first of the two coins to be produced was known as the 2006 “scientist” silver dollar and displayed a young version of Benjamin Franklin; the second silver dollar minted the same year featuring an older image of Benjamin Franklin gained the moniker “The founding father” silver dollar.

Alongside these silver dollars the U.S. Mint also produced a 2006 Benjamin Franklin Coin and Chronicles Set.
