America the Beautiful 5 ounce Silver Coins
The United States Congress authorized the Mint to issue a special silver coin collection in conjunction with the release of the America The Beautiful National Park's Quarters. The specifications made them a one of a kind...they were minted 3 inches wide out of 5 ounces of gorgeous .999 pure Silver. The coins carry the designs of each national park featured in the National Parks Quarter series, however, due to a special minting process, they feature the highest possible detail. According to U.S. Mint spokesman Michael White "More detail will be present on the 3 inch since each work die is engraved and not hubbed. The hubbing process (used on standard coins like the quarters) softens the design and removes detail." The legislation mandates that all 5 designs be recreated each year for this special collection, ensuring the complete collection of all 56 featured National Parks will be minted throughout 2021. As the news broke, collectors began to realize...these are now the largest and heaviest coin in US history - both major plusses...and with an announced mintage potential estimated at 100,000 per design, heat quickly built around their release (originally anticipated at April of 2010.) And then came the US Mint's announcement...
After delaying release for nearly 8 months, the United States Mint proudly launched all 5 designs - Hot Springs, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, and Mount Hood - in December 2010. But shockingly, the United States Mint's press release included a bombshell - due to production difficulties, just 33,000 of each design had been minted - making all 5 coins the second lowest minted modern silver coins! In fact, the only modern US silver coin with a comparable mintage is the special "West Point" minted 10th anniversary proof Silver Eagle from with a shockingly low mintage of 30,125...and a price tag of over $6,000 (and even more in certified condition!). Wow!

According to the Mint's Official Press Release: "Because the United States Mint was only able to produce and make available a limited quantity of each these silver bullion coins in the relatively short period since the authorizing legislation was approved, we anticipate that demand for these coins will be significant."
According to the Mint's Press Department: "Feature-wise, the designs are identical, however, the relief on the 3-inch bullion coin is reduced because of the ratio of the thickness to diameter is lower on the bullion coin," U.S. Mint spokesman Michael White explained in October, 2010. "More detail will be present on the 3 inch since each work die is engraved and not hubbed. The hubbing process (used on standard coins like the quarters) softens the design and removes detail."
