About this Product

America's Last large Size Dollar

The End of an Era

The Eisenhower dollar was last struck for circulation in 1978. It was in circulation for a only 8 years ( 1971 to 1978 ). It's size was it's downfall .. after being out of circulation for almost 50 years people were just not comfortable carrying a dollar coin when they could use a piece of paper. It was the last 38.1 mm silver dollar issued for circulation by the US Mint and it was the last dollar coin to contain a proportional amount of base metal to lower denominations; it has the same amount of copper-nickel as two Kennedy half dollars, four Washington Quarters, or ten Roosevelt dimes.

Was it destined to fail ?
Many will say yes... After President Eisenhower's death in 1969 we were looking to commemorate the five-star general / 34th President. We just replaced the Franklin Half Dollar with the Kennedy in 1964 and no one wanted to replace Lincoln ( cent ), Jefferson ( nickel ) Roosevelt ( dime ) or Washington ( quarter ) .. so we brought back the Dollar.

There was NO continuity of production for most of its short life. In 1971 and 1972 a Philadelphia & Denver issue were struck for circulation .. but it wasn't included in the Mint Set or Proof Set. Yet a "secret" 40% silver edition was made and sold separately at the San Francisco Mint. They didn't release one for circulation in 1973 .. but it was added to the Mint & Proof Set .. and yes the "secret" silver was made .. then in 1974 five issues were made and released .. a P & D for circulation, a Proof from San Francisco and the "secret" silvers. The Bicentennial celebration added a little flair .. no 1975 coins were released ... but a dual date 1776-1976 coin was released in 1975 and 1976 .. BUT the Lettering of the "United States of America" on the reverse was different in 1975 than in 1976 .. and here the "secret" wasn't a "secret" .. the 40% silvers were sold at banks across the country. By the time the US Mint straighten it out in 1977 .. it was decided they would stop production in 1978.

Popularity
Through all the US Mint blunders the Eisenhower has always been popular .. just not as pocket change. We like things BIG and the Ike Dollar was just that . the last massive silver dollar for circulation.

This set includes the 1971-1974 Silver Proofs, the 1973, 1974, 1977 and 1978 Clad Proofs, and the three dual date 1776-1976 coins (the silver proof, and the type 1 and 2 clad proofs). Remember no 1975 coins were released, so the US Mint made dual date coins released in 1975 & 1976.
