North Dakota followed the Nevada, Nebraska, and California coins in 2006 and will be followed by the South Dakota coin. North Dakota and South Dakota were admitted to the Union during the same signing ceremony. The winning coin design features two grazing buffalo - also known as American Bison - with a sunset view of the buttes and canyons of the states Badlands region in the background.The North Dakota State Quarter was officially launched on August 30, 2006 at a ceremony hosted by Governor John Hoeven in Bismarck.
