Design of the 2002 Mississippi State Quarter

The 2002 Mississippi State Quarter is the 20th release in the acclaimed 50 State Quarters Program by the United States Mint. The coin's reverse design, created by Thomas D. Rogers and sculpted by Donna Weaver, features two significant elements:

  1. A detailed depiction of the state flower, the magnolia, representing Mississippi's natural beauty and its nickname, the "Magnolia State";
  2. The inscription "The Magnolia State," paying homage to Mississippi's rich history and its iconic state symbol.

The coin's obverse, designed by John Flanagan, features the classic portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States.
