Design of the 2003 Alabama State Quarter

The 2003 Alabama State Quarter is the 22nd release in the acclaimed 50 State Quarters Program by the United States Mint. The coin's reverse design, created by Stephen Clark and sculpted by Donna Weaver, features three significant elements:

  1. A branch of the Longleaf Pine, symbolizing Alabama's abundant natural resources and the state tree;
  2. The Southern live oak (Quercus virginiana) and the inscription "Spirit of Courage," representing the courage of the people of Alabama during the civil rights movement;
  3. A flowing banner with the inscription "Helen Keller," honoring the renowned author, political activist, and educator who was born in Alabama and overcame significant challenges to make a lasting impact on society.

The coin's obverse, designed by John Flanagan, features the classic portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States.
