About this Product

The Westward Nickel Collection began in 2004 in commemoration of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition. The President enacted to modify the Jefferson nickel to reflect images reminiscent of the historic expedition into the Louisiana Territory. The U.S. Mint's Westward Journey Nickel Series began in 2004 with the Peace Medal nickel and followed by the Keelboatnickel. In 2005 the American Bison and the Ocean in View nickels were the next 2 released in the series. As part of the 2005 release, the U.S. changed the image of Thomas Jefferson. The new coin features the right side of Jefferson's face, instead of the frontal view seen for 67 years. Also, the word "Liberty" is shown, engraved in Jefferson's own handwriting.

The Keelboat nickel was the second nickel in the United States Mint's Westward Journey Nickel Series. It was designed to emulate the image of the very type of boat that Lewis and Clark used on their journey to finding a water route to the Pacific Ocean, along with the visions of President Thomas Jefferson.

This is the Platinum version of the Westward nickels. The coins are layered in pure platinum. The set includes one each of the coins from the Philadelphia Mint and the Denver Mint. The set will arrive to you in a 2-piece insert card with a protective lens cover.
