In Honor of the 245th Anniversary of their Founding: The 2005 Marine Corps Proof Silver Dollar

The United States Marine Corps is easily one of the most recognizable and honored branches of the U.S. military. With a rich and storied history of service dating back to the Revolutionary War (1775), the USMC has played an integral role in elevating the United States of America to its current position as a world power. Their innumerable acts of valor have lead to a great many victories for the American people, none more iconic than the one immortalized in the design of this special silver dollar: The Raising of the U.S. Flag on Iowa Jima during WWII.

It was 246 years ago tomorrow, on November 10th 1775, that the United States Marine Corps was first founded. In honor of this important anniversary, we are proud to bring back one of the most popular military coins in all of Numismatics: the 2005 Marine Corps Proof Silver Dollar!

A Special Silver Dollar for The 230th Anniversary

In 2005 for the 230th Anniversary of the United States Marine Corps, the US Mint issued their very first coin to commemorate one of the branches of the armed services! Two .900 fine Silver Dollars were issued … An Uncirculated and Proof edition, both made at the Philadelphia Mint. The US Mint issued 600,000 coins between the two types and within a couple of weeks they were completely sold out!

The obverse design of this coin depicts the Historic Flag raising on Iwo Jima, while the reverse design proudly displays the Marine Corp Emblem. Alongside their motto ‘Semper Fidelis’.
