About this Product

From Minutemen to Modern Military: The United States Army's Very Own Coin!

The United States was founded on the shoulders of the brave men and women of our military...a fact that many Americans are VERY proud to state!

On this day in history over 200 years ago, General George Washington was faced with a very serious problem...they were fighting for our fledgling nation's freedom against the world's largest military superpower in the world, and they did not have the manpower to stand a fighting chance.

Turns out, his solution was right in front of him... in every town and every village across the 13 colonies! Militia forces were already fighting alongside the continental army. They were famously called the Minutemen, because they were ready to fight in a moment's notice. Washington decided that these brave men (who often were self-supplied) would be welcomed into the continental army as true soldiers of the United States of America, forging an army of true citizen-soldiers that would go on to become our United States Army. And in 2011, the United States Mint decided it was high-time these men and women were honored with their very own coin!

Minted to Honor their Selfless Service

The United States Mint has issued more than a few coins honoring our military's service throughout the history of the United States: from the 1936 Battle of Gettysburg Half Dollar, to the 1937 Battle of Antietam, the 1991 Korean War Memorial, the 1993 WWII 50th Anniversary, and that is just naming a few of them!

But one thing the United States Mint had not done, was create a special coin to honor the very backbone our nation's military: The men and women of the United States Army. Thankfully, that was about to change! On December 1st , 2008, President Bush signed into law the "United States Army Commemorative Coin Act" which authorized the US Mint to pay tribute to the founding of the U.S. Army with special silver dollars.

A Design With TRUE Meaning

The Special release silver dollar's main theme is "Modern Service" and features the busts of a male and female soldier, symbolizing the diversity and worldwide deployment of the 21st century United States Army.

The design features an image of the Great Seal of the United States, worn on Army dress and service uniforms since the early 1800's.The reverse's design was specifically chosen to symbolize the seven core values of the United States Army. These seven values detail what it means to stand guard protecting our freedom and to combat terror in all forms both domestically and worldwide ...Those seven sacred values are: LOYALTY, DUTY, RESPECT, SELFLESS SERVICE,'HONOR, INTEGRITY and PERSONAL COURAGE.
