About this Product

The Forgotten San Francisco Silver Dollar Collection: The 1973-1981 Eisenhower & Susan B. Anthony Dollar Proof Sets

Each year, the United States Mint releases several annual collections, the finest among these being the Official U.S. Proof Sets. The U.S. Mint Proof Set contains one of each coin for that year of issue, with each being a double struck, highly polished specimen. These coins are a collector's dream, and are quite simply the best of the best. In collecting, quality always wins...so it's a no brainer that Proof Sets are also the most popular U.S. issue released every year!

Over the past few years we have seen the Presidential Dollar and Native American Dollar Series included in the yearly proof set. Collectors simply loved the inclusion of dollars in these sets, and that shows in the ever growing mintage figures for Modern Proof Sets...but what many forget is that at one point in the U.S. Mint history, dollars in proof sets were the norm! After spending most of a year searching, we can now offer you the entire 'final' run of regular issue Silver Dollar Proof Sets in United States History!

From a Silver Dollar that was 'Larger than Life'...

The Eisenhower Proof Dollar was the last "full-size" dollar (38.1 mm) the U.S. Mint included in proof sets as well as the first dollar denomination minted since the U.S. Mint stopped making the Peace Dollar in 1935. The Eisenhower's large size actually ended up being the trait that sealed the coin's fate, due to the fact that it had to compete with the convenience of dollar bills. The extremely important but short lived series lasted for only 6 years, ending in 1978.

The Proof Eisenhower in each set is the KEY coin within the U.S. Proof Set series because it is the lowest minted dollar released each year by a wide margin. Quite simply, the Eisenhower Dollar Proof Sets are an iconic addition to any Proof Set or Silver Dollar Collection!

Did you know? The Eisenhower Dollar was introduced in 1971 but was not included in the proof set until 1973.

To The elusive and forgotten 'Mini Dollars'...

The public's rejection of the larger sized Eisenhower Dollars in the 70's led the way for a new, smaller sized dollar to be introduced in 1979. The Susan B. Anthony Dollar was struck to be about the same size as a quarter, but due to the public often confusing them with the quarters in their pocket change, they halted production just three years later in 1981.

With just three years of production, the Susan B. Anthony Dollar is the shortest dollar series in U.S. history! The Susan B. Anthony Dollar Series was also groundbreaking in two other ways: it was the first coin to ever honor an individual woman, as well as the first coin to use the same reverse as another coin (the Eisenhower Dollar) within U.S. Coinage design.
