About this Product

1926 Philadelphia – Denver – San Francisco

The Peace Dollar is the last 90% silver dollar to be issued and circulated … last made over 75 years ago. It has its own story to tell .. a rather unique one.

Issued without Congressional Sanction?
The answer is yes .. the Peace Dollar was issued without congressional approval under the terms of the Pittman Act of 1918. Coin Collectors lobbied the Mint to issue a coin that memorialized the peace following World War I. Congress would not pass a bill requiring a design change (the Morgan was the last released), but they were able to persuade government officials to take action.

A Unique Design
The original design of the peace dollar was in high-relief. The images of Liberty and the Majestic Eagle created higher than traditional coins .. but after only a month the design was re-worked .. the coins wouldn’t stack properly .. thus an issue for merchants across the county. The design also incorporated the word “In God We Trust” like all US coins … but here the word “Trust” was spelled “Trvst” .. the letter “V” for victory in WWI.

1st Full Year of Production – 1922
After the Government was persuaded to change the design from the Morgan to the Peace .. and the design was corrected it was 1922. All Three US Mints struck the NEW dollar – Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco.

Each coin is encapsulated and presented in our custom display box.
