About this Product

The End of the Buffalo Nickel Era: The Denver Mint’s Final Issue in Stunning MS66 Condition

The Buffalo Nickel is considered by many to be the TRUE coin of America that embodied the spirit of the ‘Wild West’. Issued between 1913 and 1938, it is easily the most popular nickel ever produced by the U.S. Mint. The design is a timeless classic: the obverse a proud Indian chief… the reverse a buffalo modeled after America’s most famous Buffalo - Black Diamond of the New York Central Park Zoo. If it were not for the bad design placement of the date which wore off quickly, it is possible that this coin would still be in service today.

We recently had a few rolls of these hard to find pieces from the final year of issue in 1938 from the Denver Mint certified, and the results were truly a sight to behold.

A large number of these rare pieces graded in stunning MS66 Gem condition!

The 'Design Debate' Controversy

Like most of the more popular collector’s coins, the Buffalo Nickel’s run was not without controversy. It was the U.S. Mint's position that the designer, James Earle Fraser, used the images of three different Native Americans as the model for the Indian chief.

Unsurprisingly, many more individuals than three claimed the image was theirs. To help clear the air, Fraser made a statement in 1938 that the three Native Americans he used as inspiration had been "Iron Tail, a Sioux; Big Tree, a Kiowa; and Two Moons, a Cheyenne."

True Collecting Rarities - Certified MS66 Buffalo Nickels

The last Buffalo Nickel produced was made in 1938 and was issued at the Denver Mint. Its popularity was unprecedented nationwide and is still one of our most popular circulating coins to this day. Quality is a major question within the series due to the style of design chosen by the U.S. Mint. This design resulted in the date of coin wearing down quickly, and as a result had to be replaced after only a few decades in service.

Coins that are in uncirculated or better condition are the most sought after, with certified pieces being the ‘cream of the crop’.

Across all mint marks, coins in Gem condition (MS65 and higher) are incredibly rare!

Population reports show that less than ½ of 1 percent of Buffalo Nickels still exist in that condition today - and each of our coins are in stunning NGC Certified MS66 condition.

Each 1938-D Buffalo Nickel will arrive certified by NGC as being in MS66 condition.
