The Buffalo Nickel, a coin launched in 1913 and abolished in 1938, was a coin that many considered to truly embody the American spirit. It bore the image of NYC's infamous "Black Diamond Buffalo." It was not without critics, however, with the New York Times calling it both unpleasing when new, and dull when used. After the minimum 25- year period during which Congress designated that a design could not be replaced without their authorization, it was replaced by the current Jefferson nickel. This collectible 1st Year represents the actual first year of issue of the Jefferson Nickel. In 2006, the United State Mint changed the face of the Jefferson Nickel with the first "face-forward" design...but this set is the true first ever Jefferson Nickel that was issued in 1938.
