The 1980's was a decade of change for the US Mint: the Susan B Anthony Dollar was pulled from circulation in 1981 after only 3 years of production and the Mint stopped releasing Official Mint Sets for 2 years (1982 & 1983). But the most significant change was bringing back the Special Release Commemorative coins that were last made in the 1950's.

The First Release
The coin that started the modern special release craze was the 1982 Washington Silver Half Dollars. They were issued to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of our first President's birth. It was the first 90% silver coin released since 1964. And it was the first time in Mint history that the image of a president was struck on two different denominations in the same year. An Uncirculated version was struck at the Denver Mint and a Proof was struck at San Francisco. The Forgotten Pair
During the 80's the US Mint released two other special half dollars: in 1986 for the Statue of Liberty Centennial and in 1989 for the Bicentennial of Congress. But during both years the US Mint also released a Silver Dollar to commemorate the events, which took away the smaller denomination's fan fair.

The Forgotten Denomination is Today's Secret
The Half Dollar in circulation was the Kennedy with mintages in excess of 20 million coins a year. So it's not surprising that these three issues from the 1980's are often overlooked.
