About this Product

The Special Half Dollars Honoring our 1st Commander-in-chief: The 90% Silver 1982 Washington Half Dollars!

Presidents have always held a special place in United States history, but none more so than the first: George Washington.

Yesterday was a special anniversary for our first commander-in-chief… it was on this very day more than 228 years ago in 1793, Washington laid the cornerstone of our Capitol building in the city named after him, Washington D.C.

In Honor of this iconic anniversary, we are bringing back the special half dollars that many collectors have forgotten about: the 1982 George Washington 90% Silver Half Dollars!

A Man of Many Hats...

George Washington is considered to be the father of our great nation...and when you look at all his accomplishments, it's easy to see why! Before becoming our first president he began his career as a militia commander during the French and Indian War and grew to become the leader of our nation in war as the Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Numerous pieces of coinage and currency have been struck in his likeness over the many decades: the dollar bill, the quarter, the presidential dollar, and the special 1999 Gold commemorative piece! But many collectors never knew that he also had his very own special edition, one year only Half Dollar!

...and his forgotten Silver Half Dollar

Yes you read that correctly, a George Washington Half Dollar! It was released to great fanfare in 1982 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our first president's birth. It was the first 90% silver coin struck by the US Mint since 1964, and was the coin that signified a return of 90% Silver coinage to the United States Mint. The US Mint released two versions of the George Washington Half Dollar... an uncirculated piece struck at the Denver Mint and it’s proof counterpart that was produced at the fabled San Francisco Mint. The coin itself is a work of art, with the obverse featuring Washington sitting on horseback, and the reverse showing Washington's home in Mount Vernon.

But here’s the thing…this was 1982. You would not receive email notification of a new products release from Collectors Alliance direct to your smartphone…you had to be a subscriber to a little known US Mint mailing list to ever have a chance at one of these! Many collectors never knew these existed, and a large majority still don’t even to this day!
