One of the Rarest Silver Eagles known today: The 1988 Strike in certified PCGS Premier MS69
The Silver Eagle is one of the most coveted Silver Dollars released by the U.S. Mint in history...beginning production in 1986, Silver eagles are still minted and collected in the tens of millions annually! This first year of issue stands out above the rest, in large part due to its iconic position as the originator of the entire Series!
We recently came across a small hoard of year-date roll uncirculated silver eagles ranging from the first year of issue in 1986 to the mid 1990s – and when we took a look at the coins individually, their quality was incredible! We decided to send these coins over to the expert graders at PCGS and a small handful of the rolls have graded out as Near-Perfect MS69’s!
The most recent coins to return from PCGS were the 1988 strikes – of which less than ¼ of 1% exist in MS69 or better condition (In fact, PCGS has certified that as of today only 83 coins exist in PERFECT MS70!). This coin is truly one of the rarest silver eagles ever minted – and if you act fast you can get this coin for less than $70!
The Longest Running Silver Dollar in America: The Silver Eagle
The Silver Eagle Dollar is now America’s longest tenured silver dollar in United States Minting history, at over 34 years old it is now even older than the fabled Morgan Dollar Series (Minted for 28 total years)! A Large part of its popularity is due to the fact that it hits what we like to call the “Collector's Tri-Fecta”: it is the largest, heaviest and purest silver coin in U.S. history.
It is struck from one full ounce of .9993 pure American silver and is even larger and heavier than the legendary Morgan Silver Dollar. The Silver Eagle's metal content is not the only reason it is famous, it is also revered for its beautiful design: The Lady Liberty wrapped in the American Flag, a scene that is considered to be one of the greatest symbols of American Freedom. The design is a true classic that was first used on Silver Half Dollars from 1916-1947.
Since its introduction in 1986, the Silver Eagle has quickly become the World's #1 Silver Dollar.
A True Collecting Rarity – the 1988 Silver Eagle in PCGS Premier MS69
In 1988 the United States Mint produced only 5,004,646 Silver Eagles in uncirculated condition – a number that pails in comparison to the tens of millions struck per year today!
Of those Silver Eagles, PCGS has only certified 11,055 to be in MS69 or better condition – a number that breaks down to only 1 in every 453 coins known! (that means that for every Monster box of 500 silver eagles you got from the U.S. Mint, you would get just 1 of these stunning MS69’s!) – if you break the math down that is less than ¼ of 1%!
But that is not all – not only is this Silver Eagle incredibly rare – but we have our MS69’s at a value that is hard to beat!
