The 1994 World Cup Tournament was the culmination of soccer games among 141 nations. The United States was selected to host the 15th FIFA World Cup playoff, and three commemorative coins were issued to celebrate the event. Each coin employs a shared design on the reverse.

The obverse of the half dollar depicts a soccer plauer in action. The obverse of the silver dollar coin features two competing players converging on a soccer ball. It was designed by Dean McMullen, who also executed the reverse design, the offical logo that is used on all of the World Cup coins.
