The Story of the Golden Dollars
The year
2000 was the first year of issue for the Sacagawea Golden Dollar. The U.S. Mint lauched a thorough campaign in
an attempt to put dollar coins in pockets across the U.S. After the Susan B Anthony dollar failure, the
mint felt prepared to try again. They made a smaller, golden dollar and pulled
out all the tricks this time around to persuade the public to "buy in". Wal-Mart distributed the coins at stores
across the country and the Mint even gave coins away in boxes of Cheerios. But, have you seen one in circulation? Probably not. The U.S. consumer is not
easily swayed; paper money is simply more convenient. This second attempt to
bring back a dollar coin lasted merely two years. The U.S. Mint pulled back the
coin for circulation purposes in 2002. However, the coin was popular so they
decided to continue the program.
A Design Change
The Sacagawea
Dollar Series changed in 2009, after nine years the U.S. Mint changed the name
of the program to the "Native American – Sacagawea Series". The reverse design was altered to an image memorializing
Native Americans and their contributions to our country's development. This
reverse design is changed annually. Sacagawea
is still featured the obverse of the coin. Special edge lettering was also
added, the date, mint mark, and the inscription "E Pluribus Unum" are
now on the edge of the coin.
Key Issues
The coins often
forgotten are the special release proofs struck at the San Francisco Mint. These
beauties are only available in US Mint Proof Sets. Due to low mintage and
brilliant appearance, the S Mint is unquestionably the KEY of the series. We

San Francisco Mint Proof. A Proof is struck twice, giving it a razor sharp
image, struck on highly polished dies .. creating a mirror like image on the
coin. Proofs are not released into circulation, only released in special proof
sets each year.

While most coins released into
circulation are made in the hundreds of millions, proofs are made in
significantly smaller numbers...in most years the lowest struck .. period!
