About this Product

In 2001 the US Mint released the American Buffalo Silver dollars commemorating the opening of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. They were released in Proof and Uncirculated condition. The excitement of the program caused an instant sellout with final mintage figures of 227,131 Uncirculated and 272,869 Proofs.

The design was based on the original 5-cent Buffalo nickel designed by James Earle Fraser, minted from 1913 through 1938. The Silver Dollar portrays a profile representation of a Native American on the obverse and a American buffalo on the reverse.

The American Buffalo Silver dollar is struck out of .900 fine silver with a net weight of 26.73 grams. This Proof Silver Dollar issue is in the original government packaging.
