About this Product Full Product Name

The Westward Nickel Collection began in 2004 in commemoration of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition. The U.S. Mint's Westward Journey Nickel Series began in 2004 with the Peace Medal nickel and followed by theKeelboatnickel. In 2005 the American Bison and the Ocean in View nickels were the next 2 released in the series. As part of the 2005 release, the U.S. changed the image of Thomas Jefferson. The new coin features the right side of Jefferson's face, instead of the frontal view seen for 67 years. Also, the word "Liberty" is shown, engraved in Jefferson's own handwriting.

The Keelboat nickel was the second nickel in the U.S. Mint's Westward Journey Nickel Series. It was designed to emulate the image of the type of boat that Lewis and Clark used on their journey to finding a water route to the Pacific Ocean, along with the visions of President Thomas Jefferson.Lewis & Clark left Camp River Dubois in May of 1804 in a specially designed keelboat that they traveled up the Mississippi River in. Once they arrived at the first leg of their trip in Fort Mandan, they sent the boat back down the river filled with water specimens and reports, to report back to the President with. It was Lewis & Clark who established the first, most accurate waterway map of the land to the far west. The Keelboat is the best symbol to denote the type of their transit.

Each Westward nickel proof was struck at the San Francisco mint. These PROOFS were not released by the U.S. Mint into general circulation and were only available as part of the U.S. Proof Set from each year. Proofs are highly polished specimen, double struck, each coin has a deep mirror-like surface. "Proofs" are the lowest production of any U.S. Mint release. This Proof Nickel is encapsulated for protection.
