About this Product

The Westward Nickel Collection began in 2004 in commemoration of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition. The U.S. Mint's Westward Journey Nickel Series began in 2004 with the Peace Medal nickel and followed by the Keelboat nickel. In 2005 the American Bison and the Ocean in View nickels were the next 2 released in the series. As part of the 2005 release, the U.S. changed the image of Thomas Jefferson. The new coin features the right side of Jefferson's face. Also, the word "Liberty" is shown, engraved in Jefferson's own handwriting.

The Peace Medal coin was is the first new nickel in the U.S. Mint's Nickel Series. Created as an actual replication of the coins that Lewis and Clark carried. They were known then as "peace medals." They traveled with presents, such as beads, flags, uniforms and these medals to present to Indian tribes as physical tokens of friendship. The medals became very well known throughout the territories. On the obverse, an artists rendition of President Thomas Jefferson. The reverse features two shaking hands. This universal gesture is widely recognized as a symbol of friendship. The words "peace" and "friendship" are inscribed along the edge of the coin. The hands themselves are those of a Soldier and a Native American Indian. Easily identifiable by the military cuff of a uniform and the braided chevrons; and the other hand ornately decorated with a beaded border and an engraved with an eagle.

The term "Proof" refers to a method of manufacture and NOT the condition of a coin. Proof coins can usually be distinguished by their sharpness of detail, high wire edge, and extremely brilliant - mirror like surface.

Proof coins are made from highly polished dies. The coinage blanks are also polished and cleaned. They are hand fed into a coinage press one at a time, with each blank receiving 2 or more strikes from the dies to bring up sharp - high relief details. It is done at slow speeds with extra pressure.

This proof 2004 Westward Journey Peace Nickel is encapsulated for protection.
