About this Product

The Westward Nickel Collection began in 2004 in commemoration of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition. The President enacted to modify the Jefferson nickel to reflect images reminiscent of the historic expedition into the Louisiana Territory. The U.S. Mint's Westward Journey Nickel Series began in 2004 with the Peace Medal nickel and followed by the Keelboatnickel. In 2005 the American Bison and the Ocean in View nickels were the next 2 released in the series. As part of the 2005 release, the U.S. changed the image of Thomas Jefferson. The new coin features the right side of Jefferson's face, instead of the frontal view seen for 67 years. Also, the word "Liberty" is shown, engraved in Jefferson's own handwriting.

The Ocean in View is the fourth nickel released in the United States Mint's Westward Journey Nickel Series. This nickel features the first views of what Lewis and Clark encountered, and led them to believe that they had reached their goal, the Pacific Ocean. The quote, "O the Joy!" is quoted from what Captain Clark exclaimed as they arrived upon this location. Sadly, learning later that they were wrong. In fact what they did learn during this expedition and from the location was that the Missouri River was not part of a Northwest waterway passage across the continent and that there were two mountain ranges to cross instead of one.

This roll contains 40 Westward Ocean In View, uncirculated nickels, each one released from the Denver Mint.

This 40-coin roll will be sent to you in a plastic protective tube.
