The Westward Nickel Collection began in 2004 in commemoration of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition. The President enacted to modify the Jefferson nickel to reflect images reminiscent of the historic expedition into the Louisiana Territory. The U.S. Mint's Westward Journey Nickel Series began in 2004 with the Peace Medal nickel and followed by the Keelboat nickel. In 2005 the American Bison and the Ocean in View nickels were then released. As part of the 2005 release, the U.S. changed the image of Thomas Jefferson. The new coin features the right side of Jefferson's face, instead of the frontal view seen for 67 years. Also, the word "Liberty" is shown, engraved in Jefferson's own handwriting.

The Bison or Buffalo nickel is the 3rd nickel released in the U.S. Mint's Westward Journey Nickel Series. Designed to represent and more importantly, acknowledge, nature and the wildlife that Lewis and Clark came across throughout their explorations and recognize the culture of the American Indian. On the reverse, this version of this new nickels design has not changed. It still depicts the Buffalo as seen in the past on the Buffalo Nickels from 1913 through 1938. The reverse(back) features the American bison, also called a buffalo. This animal used to roam the plains in such great numbers that Lewis and Clark noted the animal often in their journals. This buffalo also reminds us of the American Indians who counted on the animal for food, clothing, and shelter.

The Mint Mark Collection includes the 2 issues released by the United States Mint for circulation. The Philadelphia Mint(P mint)and the Denver Mint (D mint). Both of the coins in this collection are uncirculated, these coins are in a small 2-piece lens with card insert.
