The Arizona State Quarter is the 48th coin in the State Quarters Collection. Arizona was the last of the 48 contiguous states to be admitted to statehood. It joined the Union on February 14, 1912. The population at that time was more than 200,000 but by the turn of the 21st century it was more than 5 million. The design for this Arizona state quarter was selected through a design competition conducted by the Arizona Quarter Commission. The final winning design was announced on May 1, 2007.

The central image of the quarter is the magnificent, Grand Canyon, which is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. It covers more than 1.2 million acres in northwestern Arizona, and joined the National Park system in 1919. Sculpted by the Colorado River, it is up to 6,000 feet deep and 18 miles wide. The "Saguaro Cactus", is shown in the design. The Saguaro Blossom is the state flower of Arizona. Also, and finally, the last component shown is a banner featuring the state nickname, "Grand Canyon State."

Each uncirculated Philadelphia Mint quarter is layered 7 times in pure platinum. Each coin is encapsulated to protect it's condition.

In December 1997, America's most adventurous coin program became a reality when President Clinton signed legislation authorizing the U.S. Mint to issue the innovative 50 State Quarters collection. Starting in January 1999, each of the 50 states in the Union will be honored on a unique Quarter Dollar commemorative coin. Five states will be featured each year, based on the order in which they ratified the Constitution or became states. The mint marks can be found to the right of George Washington's portrait on the obverse: the small "P" indicates the Philadelphia Mint and the small "D" refers to the Denver.
