About this Product

The Northern Mariana Islands Quarter is the sixth and final coin in the District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters series. The series was issued in 2009 to follow the State Quarters series that ended in 2008. With the release of the Northern Mariana Islands Quarter, each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the five overseas United States territories were all featured on unique Quarters. Each of the coins in the District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters series was issued in a limited edition of only about eight weeks.

The United States administered the Northern Mariana Islands after World War II, and in 1978 the islands became a U.S. commonwealth. Residents of the Northern Mariana Islands were granted U.S. citizenship in 1986, and they first elected a non-voting member of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2008.

The most prominent image on the Northern Mariana Islands Quarter is a large limestone latte, which was a supporting column for traditional buildings. Also shown is a canoe to represent the native populations seafaring skills, two white fairy tern birds, and palm trees on the Pacific shoreline. The design is framed at the bottom with a Carolinian mwar(head lei)that is composed of native flowers (plumeria, ylang ylang, peacock flower, and Pacific basil).

Each uncirculated quarter is layered 7 times in pure platinum. This Denver Minted coin is encapsulated to protect it's condition.
