The 2015 Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Dollar
Born in 1890, Dwight D. Eisenhower was the 34th President of the United States. He was a five-star general in the United States Army during WWII and served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe.
In his first year of Presidency, Eisenhower deposed the leader of Iran in the 1953 Iranian coup d'état and used nuclear threats to conclude the Korean War with China. He was known for using nuclear deterrence while reducing the funding for conventionial military forces. The goal of this was to keep pressure on the Soviet Union and to reduce federal deficits.
On the domestic front, he contributed to the end of McCarthyism by openly invoking the modern expanded version of executive privilege. He also launched the Interstate Highway System, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) - which led to the creation of the Internet, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
In his 1961 farewell address to the nation, Eisenhower expressed his concerns about the future dangers of massive military spending, especially deficit spending and government contracts to private military manufacterers.
Consensus among Western scholars has consistently held Eisenhower to be among the ten greatest U.S. Presidents.
The historic Presidential Dollar series began in 2007 with coins for George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. This is the FIRST coin program in U.S. History to honor all of America's Presidents, and it is destined to be the most popular collection in history, even BIGGER and more popular than the State Quarters!
