Not only is this one of the more beautiful coins produced by the United States Mint, it is also one of the rarest! In fact, among Special Issue Half Dollars, this 2016 National Parks Service Half Dollar is the rarest uncirculated coin of its kind ever produced! With a mintage of just 14,589 these coins are a true rarity...if you were to evenly distribute them among all 50 States there would be ONLY 291 coins per state, and that’s just the uncirculated coin!
The obverse of the design depicts two images: that of a hiker in awe of the wilderness’ majestic beauty on top, and that of a child discovering a small frog hidden beneath fern leaves. The two images are separated by a banner stating ‘National Parks Service’. The reverse of the design displays a recreation of the National Parks Service’s Logo, featuring the iconic Sequoia Tree, Bison, Mountain and lake the logo has become known for.
Did you know? There are 5 different meanings in the National Parks Service Logo’s design, with each representing a different aspect of the National Park Service! The Sequoia Tree represents vegetation, the Bison represents wildlife, the Mountains and water represent the recreation and scenic views, and the Arrowhead shape of the badge itself represents the iconic history and archeology found within our Nation’s national parks.
