The First of the King’s Beasts – The Lion of England


This is the first coin in the new series from the Royal Mint honoring the 10 Heraldic Beasts of the House of Tudor. The Kings and Queens of House Tudor ruled during an era that saw England grow into one of the world’s foremost superpowers and a leader of the renaissance movement.

The Heraldic Beasts of House Tudor are the 10 statues created by Henry VIII that stand guard along the Moat Bridge of Hampton Court Palace. The first of these beasts to be honored in the new series is one of the most iconic: The Lion of England!

The design of this coin features an incredibly detailed rendition of the Lion of England, wearing a crown while holding a shield that features Henry VIII and his third wife’s respective heraldries! First appearing during the 12th century, the Lion of England represents the pride and courage of the King!

The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II that was featured on all of the Queen’s Beast coins.

This coin is sure to become one of the most sought after in the entire series – Firsts in a series is always a must-own piece for any collector!
