About this Product

The End of a Collecting Era: The ‘Big Three’ 90% Silver Half Dollars

Silver coinage is hands-down one of the most collectible types of coins that exist today! With modern programs like the Silver Eagle Series growing more and more each year, silver coins have been in more demand than ever...That being said, it is shocking that it's been almost 50 years since a 90% silver half dollar has been issued for circulation!

Of all the half dollars created by the United States Mint, it was the last three of the 20th century that truly became iconic. The final three 90% Silver half dollars were the Walking Liberty, Benjamin Franklin, and John F. Kennedy....and today you can get them all in the same collection!

The Walking Liberty Half Dollar

The Walking Liberty was released in 1916 as an integral part of President Roosevelt's coin beautification project. It was his belief that a ‘super power’ nation had to have coinage the world would envy and desire. Boy was he right! The Walking Liberty is regarded as the most beautiful U.S. coin ever released into circulation; the design was so popular the U.S. Mint released it again when the Silver Eagle Dollar was introduced in 1986. Today the silver eagle is the #1 silver dollar in the world.

The Franklin Half Dollar

Introduced in 1948 the Franklin Half Dollar is the last of our circulating denominations to migrate away from Roosevelt's beautification project. The coin was part of the trend to feature the image of the significant presidents of our country's past ( like the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, & Washington quarter) but Franklin wasn't even a president! He actually he is the 1st "non" U.S. president to be honored on an American coin. His contributions to our young country's success will always be remembered, and his legacy as a founding father for our great nation is cemented in history.

The Kennedy Half Dollar

If it weren't for the unfortunate events of 1963 the Franklin Half Dollar might still be in circulation today. To honor our late President Kennedy, congress quickly petitioned a design change to our largest circulating coins. It was introduced in 1964, and with the rising price of silver, became a ‘one-year special’... It is the first and only regular issue Kennedy Half dollar to be minted from 90% silver! This distinction, along with the unique “accented-hair” design that last for a single year, after Jackie’O disliked the look and had the design altered for the years to come.
