Alaska is the home to many national parks including Glacier Bay, Denali and Katmai that help preserve the state's natural beauty and its remarkable wildlife. On April 26, 2007 Alaska's Governor, Sarah Palin announced the winning design: a grizzly bear emerging from a river with a salmon in its mouth. The grizzly bear is a symbol of Alaska's wildlife. The coin also includes the North Star to the right of the state name; the star represents Alaska as the northernmost state. The design is completed with the inscription, "The Great Land."
