The Complete Uncirculated Silver Kennedy Collection

Since 1964, the Silver Kennedy Half Dollar has been one of America's favorite coins. With a history of production well over 50 years long and still going strong! Philadelphia and Denver issues have been made each year for circulation, alongside a special collector’s edition proof has been released by the San Francisco Mint ... but very few people are aware of the KEY pieces to the series - the very rare Silver Kennedy Half Dollars! Due to their exclusion from circulating coinage, they have become known as the “Secret Kennedys” among collectors…and who doesn’t love a good secret?!

A Historic Half Dollar

President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on Nov 22nd, 1963. The very next year, Congress approved the release of a new half dollar in his memory. The 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar was released into circulation as a 90% Silver half dollar, much like the Franklin Half Dollars before it.

After one year of circulation the composition of the Kennedy Half Dollar was changed as a result of the Coinage Act of 1965. As a result the production of the Silver Kennedy’s was limited to only the Philadelphia Mint for the 1st 3 years ( 1965-1967 ). After this initial run their production was then moved to the Denver Mint for the next three mintages (1968-1970).

Few Survived the Many Years of Melting!

Over the past 4 decades we have seen three major runs on silver. There was one in the early 1980s (when silver hit $50 an ounce for the 1st time), then another short run in the 1990s, and finally we reached another high point in 2011 when silver hit $50 an ounce. These Kennedys were the last large size silver coins issued by the United States Mint and released into circulation…making it the logical coin to be sending to the melting pot for its silver content! As A Result, these silver Kennedy Half Dollars are very hard to find in good condition…mainly because the vast majority of them did not survive the years at all, let alone in a collector’s quality uncirculated grade!
