The design for this Arizona state quarter was selected through a design competition conducted by the Arizona Quarter Commission. The final winning design was announced on May 1, 2007. The central image of the quarter is the magnificent, Grand Canyon, which is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. It covers more than 1.2 million acres in northwestern Arizona, and joined the National Park system in 1919. Sculpted by the Colorado River, it is up to 6,000 feet deep and 18 miles wide. The "Saguaro Cactus", is shown in the design. The Saguaro Blossom is the state flower of Arizona. Also, and finally, the last component shown is a banner featuring the state nickname, "Grand Canyon State."
