The islands of Hawaii were ruled by several Kings until King Kamehameha I united Hawaii in 1810 as sole ruler. Hawaii's State Quarter features King Kamehameha I stretching his hand toward the 8 Hawaiian Islands. Kamehameha is the 2nd Native American to appear on a circulating U.S. Coin, since Sacagawea. The state's motto is on the coin means: "The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness."
