The design if the Indiana State Quarter was selected following a statewide competition organized by the Indiana Quarter design committee. First lady Judy OBannon started accepting design concepts at the Indiana State Fair on August 17, 1999. The central image on the coin is a racecar to represent the world-famous Indianapolis 500 race that is held annually at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Other design elements are a circle of 18 stars surrounding a 19th star to symbolize Indiana as the 19th state, the state map, and the state motto Crossroads of America.
