About this Product

The Mercury Dime represented a welcome change in US coinage design. First introduced in 1916, the new dime design featured a portrait of Liberty facing left, wearing a winged cap. This cap symbolized freedom, a reference to freed roman slaves who wore such caps. But because of the resemblance to the Roman god, Mercury, the coin quickly became known as the "Mercury" Dime. The reverse blends a Roman fasces (ax surrounded by a tied bundle of sticks) and an olive branch, indicating America's military readiness but also their desire for peace. Issued until 1945, the Mercury Dime series is one of the most popular in all of American numismatics.

Each coin in this 10-coin roll is in pristine condition, just as it was stuck nearly three quarters of a century ago.

Did you know? The Mercury dime was made out of .900 fine silver, the smallest circulating silver coin of the 20th century. During the Great Depression the dime was the theme coin in the down-and-outers' anthem, "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" Also, the desire of Mint Director Ross to replace the Mercury dime with one portraying Benjamin Franklin in 1938 was delayed until after WWII, with Franklin eventually finding a home on the half dollar ten years later. In 1946, following the death of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a new design with a portrait of the former President was issued on the dime.

The Mercury dime served to symbolize more than freedom of thought: it also was a symbol of America's new spirit. But few would quibble with the designs of the new silver coins - the Mercury dime, and the Walking Liberty half Dollar. They have to be on everyone's short lists of the finest U.S. coins ever made.
