Series I started in 1999 when the U.S. Mint embarked on the 50 State Quarters collection. Starting in January 1999, each of the 50 states in the Union were honored on a unique Quarter Dollar coin. Five quarters were featured each year, each struck for only 12 weeks. They were released in the order in which they ratified the Constitution or became states. The program ran until 2009, and included Washington D.C. and the five territories. Series II started in 2010. To differentiate the 2nd quarter the US Mint titled this new series "America the Beautiful Quarters" or "National Parks." Five quarters are being released each year, just as in Series I. Under this program, five new reverse designs will appear on the quarter-dollar each year beginning in 2010 and through 2021.
Series II honors 56 national parks and other national sites in each state, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories - Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, United States Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands. The coins in Series II will be issued in the order in which the featured site was first established as a national park or site.
