Description

A Silver Nickel ... Yes !!

Besides steel, the other commodity needed for the war effort was nickel and on October 8th, 1942 the US Mint pulled nickel for our 5-cent piece. It was replaced with a temporary composition that included 35% silver. This new "silver" nickel was issued between 1942 and 1945 ... it was struck at all three mints: Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco. To help differentiate it from the regular issue nickel the US Mint placed the Mint Mark on the reverse of the coin above the dome of Monticello. 1942 marks the 1st time in mint history the "P" - Philadelphia mint mark was used on a US coin.

In total there were 11 nickels struck by the US Mint in silver. We've assembled them all. Each uncirculated gem is encapsulated and presented in a custom display box.
