The F.U.N. Show ‘Secret’ Silver Eisenhower Dollars: The 1971 Silver Proofs in PCGS Certified PR69!

On July 27, 1971, President Nixon presented the first Proof Eisenhower dollar, fresh off the presses of the San Francisco Mint, to former First Lady Mrs. Mamie Eisenhower at a White House reception. This solemn ceremony began one of the mint’s most popular coin series’: The Eisenhower Dollar. When it was initially launched it was received with huge fan fare… largely due to the fact that the Silver Dollar was finally back after a 35 year hiatus!

While down in Florida for the recent F.U.N. Show we came across a small hoard of Proof Eisenhower Dollars… and after taking a closer look what we found was shocking! Not only were these stunning Eisenhower Dollars in almost mint condition – the majority of them were the ‘Secret’ Silver Proof Ike’s struck just for collectors that were never released into circulation!

But wait, it gets even better! Not only do we have the stunning 1st-Year-of-Issue 1971 Silver Proof Eisenhower Dollars, but each of our coins have also now been certified by PCGS as being in incredible Near-Perfect PR69 condition!

The 1971 Eisenhower Dollar: Over 100 Million Strong

The Philadelphia and Denver Mints actually struck this new Eisenhower dollar for circulation in a brand new metal type never used before by the United States Mint: copper-nickel clad (sometimes referred to as “cupro-nickel clad” by collectors).Due to its popularity and widespread use, the Eisenhower dollars produced by these two mint’s totaled in excess of 100 million coins. In fact, more Eisenhower Dollars were produced in 1971 than it’s predecessor, the Peace Dollar, had created in its entire final decade of production!

But there were a select number of Proof issues struck at the Iconic “Old Granite Lady” (the San Francisco Mint) and those are the most sought after Eisenhower dollars in the entire collection!

The Old Granite Lady’s ‘Secret’ Eisenhower Dollars

Did you know...The 1971 Eisenhower Dollar was not included in the US Mint Proof & Uncirculated Set!

The Eisenhower dollar presented to the former First Lady at that ceremony was a San Francisco Mint Silver Proof… making it one of the sought after ‘Secret’ Silver Eisenhower Dollars. The San Francisco Mint struck two silver Eisenhower dollars in 1971, an Uncirculated version (known as the “blue pack”—because of its iconic blue packaging) and a Proof version (known as a “brown pack”).

Both versions of the coin were special silver issues with neither being released into circulation, making them a collector’s dream! These secret sets were produced from 1971-1974 and are the KEY pieces to any Eisenhower Dollar Collection.

Was it meant to be a real "secret"? Probably not, but very few know that they exist at all, making them the essential “Secret Collector’s Coin” to own! The best part is that while the story is really cool, it is the mintage figures that back up this Eisenhower Dollar’s status among collectors...

Less than 3% of all first-year 1971 Eisenhower Dollars were San Francisco Mint Silvers!

A True Collecting Rarity – in Certified Near-Perfect PR69 condition!

This special coin in PCGS Near-Perfect PR69 condition is a truly rare piece… and you don’t need to take our word for it, just take a look at the numbers!

Total 1971 Brown Pack Mintage: 4,265,234 vs. PCGS PR69 or better: 39,585

Less than 1% of all 1971 Silver Proof Ike’s exist in this grade or better!

That means that as of today (08/10/2021) just 1 in every 108 ‘Brown Pack’ Silver Proof’s exist in this condition (PCGS PR69) or better!

Talk about Rare!
