Design of the 2002 Tennessee State Quarter

The 2002 Tennessee State Quarter is the 16th release in the popular 50 State Quarters Program by the United States Mint. The coin's reverse design, created by Donna Weaver and sculpted by Charles L. Vickers, features three significant elements:

  1. A guitar, symbolizing the state's rich musical history and its contributions to country, blues, and rock music;
  2. A trumpet and a fiddle, representing the state's diverse musical heritage and the significance of the Grand Ole Opry;
  3. Three stars, paying homage to Tennessee's state flag and its division into three regions: East, Middle, and West Tennessee.

The coin's obverse, designed by John Flanagan, features the classic portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States.
