Design of the 2002 Indiana State Quarter

The 2002 Indiana State Quarter is the 19th release in the popular 50 State Quarters Program by the United States Mint. The coin's reverse design, created by Donna Weaver and sculpted by Norman E. Nemeth, features three significant elements:

  1. An IndyCar, symbolizing Indiana's connection to the world-renowned Indianapolis 500 auto race and its role in the development of transportation;
  2. A map of Indiana, highlighting the state's geographical position and the 19 stars representing Indiana as the 19th state to join the Union;
  3. The state's motto, "Crossroads of America," emphasizing Indiana's central location and its importance as a transportation hub throughout American history.

The coin's obverse, designed by John Flanagan, features the classic portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States.
