2021 Silver Eagle - West Point Mint - Proof - Type 1 - Original Government Packaging

The silver eagle has been a constant in collecting for more than 35 years since its debut in 1986 and this year, 2021, marks the final Silver Eagle struck with the same reverse that we have grown to love. This is the only year in the Silver Eagle series that there will be TWO DIFFERENT designs released – starting the year with a ‘Type 1’ (the Old Design) and later this year a ‘Type 2’ (The New Design). Alongside this design change is the incorporation of anti-counterfeiting technology into the coins!

That means these 2021 ‘Type 1’ Proof Silver Eagles are first-ever ‘Type’ Proof Silver eagles made by the U.S. Mint – and thanks to the design change later this year, they will also be the last of their kind!

Due to the ongoing global pandemic impacting the nation, the United States Mint in West Point has needed to be closed periodically for cleaning and unfortunately that stops production. While the West Point Mint was out of commission, the San Francisco & Philadelphia Mints stepped in & continued to produce the 2021 Type 1 Uncirculated silver eagles to help meet the ever-increasing collector demand! While this was a great fix for producing Uncirculated Silver Eagles, their Proof counterparts was another story entirely.

As a result of these difficulties, the U.S Mint decided it would do something it had never done before – set a mintage limit for that years Proof Silver Eagle! They came to the conclusion that the West Point Mint would only strike a grand total of 327,440 Type 1 Proof Silver Eagles!

With a total mintage of just 327,440 Proof Silver Eagles, these coins already rank as one of the rarest Proof Silver Eagles ever made! It is Easily the Rarest West Point Mint Proof since 2014!
