The Buffalo Roams Again
A Complete Vintage Collection

Between 1907 and 1909 the US Mint put forward an initiative to beautify our coinage. It lead to the change of designs on 5 of our circulating coins: the Indian cent was replaced by the Lincoln in 1909 and all 4 circulating gold coins were revisited (the $2-1/2 & $5 Libertys were replaced by the incuse design Indians and the $10 and $20 Libertys were replaced by the artistic St. Gaudens designs). Their success lead to the nickel being redesigned in 1913 to a design that won over the hearts of the people ... The Buffalo Nickel.

Only 25 Years in Circulation!
Even though the design was very popular, the functional aspects of the coin didn't meet the needs of commerce. Maybe we should have known better? The initial design was delayed a number of times, initially by the Hobbs Manufacturing Company who made mechanisms for vending machines. The design proved difficult to detect vs. a slug but the mint went into production anyways. The ultimate decision to pull the plug came because the actual design wore quickly, especially the date. But to redesign the coin would take an act of congress, so it had to wait 25 years, eventually being replaced by the Jefferson nickel in 1938.

A Complete Collection
Between 1913 and 1938 the US Mint struck the Buffalo Nickel 23 out of the 25 years. Over the past six months our buyers put have search all the major coin shows and have put together a handful of 23 coin year date collections, one from every year it was issued.

Quality
The Key point on the Buffalo Nickel is the date on the bottom left hand side of the face of the coin. When we search a bag of buffalos it's not uncommon to find less than 20% with full 4 digit dates (1913 as an example). Our circulated collection, all 23 coins are hand-picked with full date detail.

Value
We searched the industry and couldn't find anyone selling full sets like this. Most had a few dates but not all 23. If we add up the lowest priced coins we could find for each year we came up with a price just under $300 - a little over $13 a coin. Which is not a bad price! But we have them today for only $179.95 - that's under $8 per coin. Plus each is encapsulated and presented in a custom display box.
