The Eisenhower Dollar was doomed before it was released. The idea was a good one .. coins last for decades, paper money only months .. but they forgot to ask us our opinion. Or they could have looked at our coinage history to get the answers. When the treasury released small size currency in the 1920's the American public started to use it … it was almost half the size of the earlier saddle blanket notes .. and it was paper so it wasn’t heavy like a silver dollar to carry. It was an improvement on both fronts. So after only a few years in service the US Mint stopped production of the Peace Dollar in 1935.
A Short Series It didn’t take long to have the same results surface a 2nd time. The Eisenhower Dollar was only in circulation for 8 years ... 1971 to 1978.
Secret Silver Issues
A well kept secret was the San Francsico Mint Silver issues released the 1st 4 years – 1971 to 1974. They were made out of 40% silver, and struck in both uncirculated and Proof Condition.
The Rarest Ike
If you look at the series the lowest mintage uncirculated and proof coins were released the same year ... 1973. The regular issue Philadelphia and Denver mint coins were not released into circulation. But even with that said the KEY issue, the ones with the lowest mintages, belonged to the “secret” silver coins.
